The Center of Japanese Studies' research activities concentrates on early-modern and modern Japanese history. Two of the most significant topics are the Bakumatsu and Meiji Period and the Japanese security policy. Dr. Kodet is also an author of two significant scientific books on Japanese history. The members of the Center of Japanese Studies regularly publish the results of their research in international academic Journals.

The Life and World of the Warriors of Old Japan
The Way of the Samurai concentrates on the history of premodern Japan. The author focuses his attention on the
world of the samurai, their art of war, weapons, customs, religion, and way of life. The book focuses on these topics
in separate chapters, which deal with the individual questions in detail. It focuses on the evolution of the
samurai class throughout its existence and aims to show how it changed through history and how the samurai lived and led their wars.

The Conflicts of Old Japan 1156–1877
The book is concentrated on the history of significant conflicts in Japanese history. The samurai played a crucial role in forming Japan, its politics, warfare, and society
from the 12th until the 19th century. Their conflicts periodically brought turmoil, destruction, and anarchy. On
the other hand, the samurai-formed governments were, in many cases able to maintain long periods of peace and
prosperity. In his book, Roman Kodet chronologically analyses the significant wars in Japanese history.

The monograph published by a former student of the Department of Historical Sciences was one of the significant results of the Center of Japanese Studies research. It is
dedicated to the history of Japanese relations with Korea in the 19th and 20th centuries. It concentrates on the significant problems in the shared history of both countries, starting with the Kanghwa Treaty in 1876 and finishing at the end of the 20th century.

War, Great Powers, Revolution, and the Emergence of Modern Japan (1850-1880)
For many centuries the samurai dominated the Land of the Rising Sun. Under their rule, Japan experienced a period of prosperity and peace from the beginning of the 17th century. All this is at the cost of isolating the country from the West. After 1854, however, Japan had to open its ports to European and American vessels and subsequently establish official relations with the Western powers.
