International Advisory Board
The International Advisory Board of the Center of Japanese Studies aims to strengthen our ties with universities and researchers all over the world. Furthermore, it represents a platform to discuss future scientific and educational cooperation. The members are well-acclaimed scholars in Japan's history, culture, and society of Japan. The board meets biannually to discuss current research and topics concerning the cooperation of our institutions. In addition, the Center of Japanese Studies keeps the members of IAB informed on its activities and consults possibilities of mutual collaboration.
Luka Culiberg
University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana (Slovenia)
Professor Luka Culiberg is the Head of the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. As its graduate, he continued his studies at the Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo. His primary focus is research of Japanese culture and society. He concentrates on the theories of culture and modernity. Professor Culiberg engages in long-term relationships between his home university and many international institutions worldwide.
Ursula Koike
Kumamoto University, Kumamoto (Japan)
Ursula Koike is a professor at the Center for International Education of Kumamoto. University. She gained her doctoral degree in Japanology at Zurich University in 1993. Her dissertation was focused on samurai uprisings between 1868–1878. She focuses mainly on local Japanese history from an international perspective. She cooperates with numerous universities in Japan and all-over the world.
Thomas Lockley
Nihon University, Tokyo (Japan)
Professor Thomas Lockley is a lecturer at Nihon University, College of Law in Tokyo. His courses include the International History of Japan, Britain, and Japan in History and East Asia in Japanese History. He is the author of a world-class bestseller dealing with the life of the first non-Japanese samurai Yasuke. Prof. Lockley is a leading scholar in his field of study and engages in many projects dedicated to popularizing Japanese history and culture.
Jolanta Młodawska-Bronowska
University of Lodz, Lodz (Poland)
Jolanta Młodawska-Bronowska is an economist who graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Trade, Department of Economics and Sociology at the University of Lodz in Poland. After earning her Ph.D, she spent 6 years living in Tokyo, where she gained a deep understanding of Japanese modern economy and society. This experience led her to publish the first Polish monograph on Japanese post-war industrial relations titled "Japan: The State and Private Sector." Her habilitation dissertation focused on Japan's hi-tech industry during the 50 post-war years. Currently, drawing on her socio-economic background, she teaches Japanese ethics as a form of soft power and as a crucial contribution to Japan's economic strength.
Natsuda Kaoru
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Beppu (Japan)
Professor Natsuda gained Ph.D in Economics, Department of Political Economy, School of Economics and Political Science, the University of Sydney, Australia. He has a long experience in teaching in the field of international relations and an outstanding scientific career.
Otaka Toshio
Kokushikan University, Tokyo (Japan)
Prof. Otaka Toshio is an external member of the Center of Japanese Studies. His main field of research is applied science and engineering. He is also dedicated to the question of the interconnection of Japanese culture and technology.
Zuzana Stuchlíková
Prague University of Economics and Business (Czech Republic)
Ms. Stuchlikova has been working at the Department of International Economic Relations at the Faculty of International Relations (Prague University of Economics and Business) since 2004. She has been a supervisor of the minor program Chinese Studies and the head of the Center for Asian Studies at the Faculty of International Relations. Ms. Stuchlikova got her Ph.D. degree in 2008, and she was appointed " a docent" (associate professor) in 2015. Ms. Stuchlikova has been specializing in the Chinese and Japanese economies developments, global economic trends (demographic aging, income inequalities, middle-class developments, and innovations), and international trade. She used to be an editor-in-chief of the scientific journal “Soucasna Evropa” (Current Europe). She has experience from research stays in China and Japan.
Aneta Pawłowska

Professor Aneta Pawłowska is a leading Polish scholar in the field of cultural history. During her carrier, she concentrated on studying art history and its development in various world regions. She is active in the leading positions of her faculty and strongly contributes to its cooperation with institutions all over the world. For example, thanks to her effort, the ties between the University of Lodz and the University of West Bohemia were established, with frequent exchanges of academic staff and students.
